Facebook has been known for jumping the gun in many cases and this new story is none to different. Harlem Shake viral videos posted (not even uploaded) are being taken down for copyright reasons.

A lot of Facebook fan page administrators are reporting they are receiving the below message from Facebook in regards to the removal of a post infringing copyright. In this situation it centers around a legal battle (still ongoing) between the Harlem Shake recording artist and other industry players who claim the artist stole samples from their work.

Some Community Managers may have already began promoting the Harlem Shake video post on other channels, such as; on SMS, Twitter  or even Facebook ads to draw more Facebook conversion. As Facebook is shooting first (removing the video) and informing later the multi-platform promotion could fail.

Key Learning’s:

  • Always use Creative Commons content to avoid copyright infringements in the first place.
  • When promoting Facebook posts in cross platform content keep a good eye on that the content remains in place during the promotion.
